Genesis 29:31-30:24 brings our focus to the troubled household of Jacob. Patriarch, yes. But godly father and husband? Far from it. He is married to not one, but two sisters. And these are sisters that are rivals for their husband’s affection – and for their own aims and aspirations. We find in this story three people caught up in great sin, struggling in a situation beyond their control, where even wombs are used as weapons. This is a sad narrative. And yet, it is a narrative that resonates with many of us in many ways, because the same base sins that beset Jacob, Leah and Rachel are the same ones we face. When we seek satisfaction anywhere but in Jesus we will never find peace. But in Jesus, we discover joy and contentment beyond our wildest dreams.
